A direct vent fireplace is a fireplace that burns gas logs whose fumes escape the same way that smoke does from a traditional fireplace, that is, through an open damper leading directly to the chimney. A direct vent fireplace is more complicated than a vent free fireplace for that reason (i.e., the latter can be installed without a damper and chimney), but many people prefer it for its realism. The gas logs of a direct vent fireplace burn much more realistically than those of a vent free fireplace.
