The cry of Dwight’s heart was that God would fill him with the Holy Spirit. That desire continued to overwhelm him and rule over all others. Following the great Chicago fire, during which Moody’s church was burned down, nearly all the chains holding him to Chicago were snapped. The remaining chain was his own will. His unyielding will was the cause for his inner turmoil, which continued unabated. Yet he craved God’s power. Moody was wrestling, panting for a Pentecost.

When Moody came to the end of himself and surrendered his will to the will of God, the last chain snapped. Immediately an overpowering sense of God’s presence flooded his soul. Almighty God had come to him. Without wasting a moment’s time Dwight locked himself in a nearby friend’s room so he could be alone with God. The room seemed ablaze with God. He stretched out on the floor and lay bathing his soul in the Divine. Of this communion and mountain top experience Moody later wrote, “I can only say that God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand.”
